Free Tyre Check

Damaged tyres may be illegal. The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm. You should also look for cuts, cracks and bulges or any other sign of damage or excessive wear on the inner, outer or middle of the tyre.

For peace of mind and if you’re not sure about the condition of your tyres just drop in to our Milton Keynes garage and we will check them for you.

We will give you as much guidance as possible to get the right and best value tyres for your vehicle, whilst always remembering quality is also crucial for vehicle safety.

Penalties for Illegal Tyres

For most vehicles the fine is up to £2,500 and three penalty points for each illegal tyre. So, 4 illegal tyres and you could also be looking at a ban!

Offences not only relate to tread depth but can also apply to incorrect mix of tyres, not inflated correctly, cuts, lumps, bulges, tears, exposed ply or cord and unsuitable tyres.

Tyre Safety

Tyre Tread

Without the correct tread, you get poorer tyre performance in wet conditions, higher stopping distances and less reduced road safety.

The legal minimum depth in the UK for cars and vehicles up to 3500kg gross weight is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the breadth of the tread and round the circumference of the tyre. Most tyres also have tread wear indicators, usually at least 6 small ribs across the bottom of the main tread grooves and when the tread reaches these grooves, the tyre needs replacing. If you are not sure, just pop in and we will check your tyre tread without charge.

Tyre Pressure

We recommend checking your tyre pressure at least once a month. You’ll usually find the recommended pressures in the drivers’ manual or often in the front drivers door opening.

If your tyres are under inflated, your vehicle can be dangerous with less grip and poorer handling. You will also have an increased risk of a high speed blow out and reduce your fuel economy.

Don’t forget to check your spare tyre in case of emergency.

Tyre Damage

Check for cuts, cracks and bulges in the tyres which can be illegal and dangerous.

Tracking (Wheel Alignment)

Incorrect tracking, often caused by clipping the kerb or potholes will increase wear and tear on your tyres and causes them to wear unevenly.

If your tyres are being scrubbed out on the inner edges, the steering wheel is off centre or pulls to the left or right, these are common signs of incorrect tracking.
