When to Get Your Brakes Checked

Brakes are obviously one of the most important items to get regularly checked on your vehicle. As a minimum we recommend inspecting brakes every 12,000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first.

The problem is that brakes may not become less effective over time until they are completely warn, causing further damage to discs and so causing further expense! We can detect possible damage well before then.

We check brakes on services, but it can also make sense to have a brake check with the change in seasons or before a long trip or if you have any doubts about the effectiveness of your brakes such as…

  • Dashboard brake warning light
  • Juddering when braking
  • Squealing noise when braking
  • Grinding noise when braking
  • Grinding noise whilst driving
  • Sponginess
  • High hard brake pedal
  • Rear wheels locking on braking
  • Vehicle pulling to one side when braking
  • High handbrake

We look at the whole braking system for signs of wear and tear, corrosion or degeneration.

Brake Fluid

When you apply pressure to your brake, a hydraulic fluid rushes to each caliper, pushing the piston to activate the braking that slows the vehicle and over time the fluid absorbs moisture and contaminants which affects the performance.

Regular brake fluid checks will ensure your brakes last longer and work better. To minimise the risk of brake failure we check…

  • the level of brake fluid
  • moisture levels of the hydraulic fluid
  • the integrity of the storage and distribution system

There are different types of brake fluid and it’s important to use the right one for your vehicle as recommended by the manufacturer or exceeds it. We use a product that will match the technical specification of your vehicle to prolong brake life and maximise an effective smooth brake action.
